precipitation. and we are seeing rainfall across its area right now. most of it is not heavy rain. it's around washington, the beltway, outside of the beltway and then points west as well. some light to moderate rainfall. on top of that we have mist and fog out there so as you saw in the live shot, visibility is reduced this morning. to the graphics and starting with a broader radar image. you can see the precip coming through. yes, it's coming from the south and we'll continue to see that trend today. periods of rain all day long. some could be heavy. can't rule out a thunderstorm. and also can't rule out a severe thunderstorm later on. right now current conditions at reagan national, 66 degrees. relative humidity 98 -- i'm sorry 90%. there is fog, there is mist out there as well. winds are light out of the north at 7 miles per hour. your forecast for today,

big delays from dumfries north. delays from 7100 to nutley street and to the beltway. that's a check of your fox 5 on- time traffic. our top story this monday morning, a man found shot inside a car in landover, maryland, the same area another man was shot day -- days ago. sarah simmons is live. >> reporter: good morning. just eight days ago there was a man found shot to death here on dodge park road. the 3400 block as well. so police are still investigating that. then last night another man was shot. this was 10 minutes before midnight, last night. 3400 park of dodge park road once again. officers were called here for a report of a shooting. once they arrived they found a male with a gunshot wound. they took him to the hospital where he was then pronounced dead. now at this point, i talked

with residents who say they are concerned for the neighborhood and one gentleman said he is also very concerned for his family. >> it's too close to home. i have children. so it's too close to home. nothing warrants that time of action. there is always another way out of course. maybe they had squad cars coming through more often maybe, maybe to prevent it. but who knows. it's pretty much nothing you can do. >> reporter: now again this case is very similar to the one on september 18th when 22-year- old donald eugene rieves was found shot to death inside of a car. at this point police have not identified this latest suspect. they are in the process of doing their investigation in both cases and still looking for suspects and a motive behind this. they simply don't know. and it's still unclear whether or not these two incidents are

actually connected, something police will be looking into as well. we're live in land over, sarah simmons, back to you. meantime ray woman accused of chilling a chevy chase doctor six years ago was found dead at a state mental hospital. susan sacks was found strangled in her bed yesterday morning. she was murdered by another patient. she was accused of the stabbing and killing the doctor. it's not clear how the killer got into her room. around 8:00 p.m. a victim was walking in silver spring in the 8700 block of carol avenue near piney branch road and a driver struck and dragged daniellea ally and sped off. she was hospitalized and is in serious condition. neighbors say the narrow

stretch of carol avenue can be hazardous. >> i've seen a crossing guard almost get hit, trying to cross the kids to get to school. people don't go by the speed limit. >> it's a busy street. you have to look and see what is coming, make sure that you're out of harm's way before you get into your vehicle. >> police are looking for a small, dark-colored sedan, possibly a honda and damage to the right side of the hood and windshield. a salisbury maryland girl killed last december wants the state's attorney to prosecute the case even after he leaves office. he lom the -- he lost the primary this month and said he knows the case best and should remain the prosecutor. he said he would let york handle case but he has not

ruled it out. some calling stephen colbert 's presentation last week on capitol hill. we're going to take a closer look at this when we are joined by farm johnson in a few minutes. a manassas fire marshall said a cigarette caused a fire that destroyed three homes and damaged five others. and he said gusty winds and the homes were so close together were other factors. the fire on thursday was one of the biggest residential fires ever in manassas. slot machines are coming to maryland and a few days earlier than expected. the casino is opening in less than one hour. the first slot casino in perryville just got approval from the lottery commission to

less than a month away, democrats look for a growing republican tide. doug luzader has more details from capitol hill. >> reporter: remember this kind of enthusiasm? the president sure does. but many voters may not. now the white house is trying to reach out to the same young voters that helped propel president obama to victory years ago. >> the republicans have a plan to win an election to move this country forward to strengthen middle class families to make a difference for people over time. >> that is a message the president will take to college campuses, to bring back republican gains that could allow them to take over one or both houses of congress in november. last week house republicans unveiled their pledge to america, a broad strategy to end the obama agenda. >> once americans understand how big the problem is, we can begin to talk about potential solutions. but i'm committed to having that adult conversation with the american people because it

morning, the obama administration trying to keep mideast peace talks alive now that the halt to the settlement construction has expired. the palestinians said they would quit peace talks if they resumed the building in the west bank. so far no signs of construction today. hillary clinton and special enjoy george mitchell are continuing to talk to officials from both side. in venezuela, after yesterday's election for parliament, hugo chavez has won enough votes. with most votes counted so far, he has 90 seats, his opponents had 59. there are still 20 seats to be decided but it looks like the opposition has broken his two- thirds majority in the national assembly. crews are trying to rescue the chilean miners. relatives of the men got a firsthand look of the device being sent down holes to pull the miners out.

they are now getting details instruction on the plan. the men are not expected to be rescued until late october or early november. deadly shooting near the campus of seton hall university hitting close to home. five people were gunned down in east orange, new jersey, over the weekend. one died. she was from virginia. her friend said a fight broke out and a man was kicked out of the party but he returned and started shooting. the gunman is still on the loose. the head of a georgia megachurch accused of inappropriate sexual conduct did not address the issue during sunday services. bishop eddie long is facing sexual relations with young boys. in church yesterday, while some wanted him to address the charges, he promised to fight. >> i want you to know one other thing, i feel like david against goliath. but i got five rocks, and i

let's take a look at our graphics and we'll show you the big picture radar as we can show you the precipitation continuing to move in from the south. so even though we are getting a break here and there at this hour, or this moment, there is more to come. it's going to be a rainy day. look at this heavy rain now in north carolina. now does that hold together like that and come through our area? i don't think so. but we've been talking about the possibility of rain through the course of the day and maybe even thunderstorms. temperatures are about where we should be. we are at -- it's actually now 67 degrees in washington. and temperatures in the 60s across most of the region. off to the east we do have temperatures in the low 70s. the forecast for washington for today looks like this: cloudy and cool, rain heavy at times, could be a thunderstorm or two this afternoon. high about 74 degrees. then for tonight, we'll see our lows overnight in the upper 60s

in town. mid and low 60s elsewhere. cloudy skies, rain does continue tonight. five-day forecast, tomorrow rain still into the morning. high tomorrow about 80 degrees and i think that rain dissipates by afternoon. wednesday partly cloudy and 75. thursday a good chance of more rain showers through the day on thursday. friday looks pretty good, mostly sunny and 74 degrees. that's the latest on what is happening with the weather. now let's get the latest on traffic with julie wright. busy commute on the highways. new accident to report in virginia. inner loop of the beltway at braddock, tieing up the left side of the highway. delays from the springfield interchange. on the inner loop, slow right now as you continue to work your way from silver spring toward 95 college park. that's where we had the crash tieing up the right side of the highway. outer loop slows leaving 95 to georgia. 95 and the bw both congested out of laurel. checking for an incident north of 29 north of the beltway.

in virginia, dale boulevard, gridlock traffic. northbound and the main line headed toward the occuquan. earlier accident cleared and the crash at route 1 and that accident moved to the shoulder. finding three 395, traffic low from the beltway toward the 14th street bridge with a few breaks along the way. that's a check of your fox 5 on- time traffic. our farms are far too independent on immigrant labor to pick our fruits and vegetables. the obvious answer is for us to stop eating fruits and vegetables. >> stephen colbert's showed his difficult humor. but not everybody was a fan of his visit to capitol hill to talk about immigration. joining us to talk about the hot topics, von johnson. let's start with that. we heard various responses from steny hoyer saying this was an embarrassment and others saying this is what is expected.

what did you think? >> i think it was washington theater at its best. we have gotten wrapped up in the political issue of immigration and this was a chance to call attention to it in a ways that never been done before. i've never seen so many cameras in the room and i thought it was wonderful. >> does it work to take that approach to this issue? >> i'm not sure what works. this is an issue that is such a hot-button for both republicans and democrats. everyone is staying away from it. republicans don't want to be seen as supporting anything that might help an immigrant. so i think in some ways it was a last-ditch effort to call attention to some that it is very important. there are serious undertones here but at a certain point you have to throw everything at it no matter what. >> it definitely packed the room. no doubt about that. how do you grade his performance? >> i thought it was wonderful. it was interesting to see if he was in character and there were other points when he was not in character. toward the end of the hearing

he was interested in people with no power and thought this particular group of workers is one of the most powerless in our country and that was very moving. i don't think that was the typical care acper that he normally portrays. but he didn't back down. i disagree with steny hoyer in thinking it was embarrassing. it's hard to imagine how a comedian like stephen colbert could be embarrassed. >> and the question is, what you just touched in, how do you feel the members of congress responded. >> they were very much in character too. the chairwoman of the subcommittee is a very even- handed and nice woman dealing with this issue for a while. and steven king who is the republican leader on that subcommittee has been trying to stop anything that would involve so-called amnesty or anything that would help immigrants. he's a border security guy and he played his role so i thought it worked out perfectly. >> the whole thing touches on the bigger issue when we talk

about the immigration issue and we have the dream act from last week. but what is the latest now? >> there is effort to try to bring it up again. the dream act is one of those smaller immigration issues that effect a smaller group of people. they are more sympathetic and undocumented students who want to go to college. the likelihood that anything will happen is slim. we all know that right now the members of congress are looking to get through the election and afterwards there will not be an appetite for a lot of talk. >> and then the republican pledge to america which we saw last week. obviously immigration is a part of that, though republicans say maybe not a big enough part of that. is there in-fighting among the ranks. >> there is not a lot of in- fighting but the question is how much emphasis do you push

on it. but i did notice the word "amnesty" does not appear. it does talk about border security and talks about national security so we're talking about terrorism, iran and iraq. and then local government. and that might be a very veiled way of endorsing arizona's tough immigration law but it's not a huge part of the republican pledge. >> it's interesting because when they first came out with the pledge, some of the responses and the support from republicans was look, look, at least we're putting something out there, a plan out there. but now it seems like the negative response comes from more conservative republicans saying well you put something out there, but maybe you didn't put enough. >> and that's going to be a dynamic we see going forward, especially if the republicans gain control of one or both chambers of the house. they'll have to -- there will be people on certain sides saying we need to push hearder on -- push harder on issues and

here, throughout the october time, and it is so much fun that we are drawing people out. it's the perfect family vacation to just get out for the day and enjoy the temple hall farm and enjoy the activities. because we've been adding new activities every year. so if you went out to the corn maze out here a few years ago, you need to come back because it's a new, better, different experience. >> it is. i remember when we came out here and it was just the corp maze. and when you say come spend the day here, he's not kidding. one of the things we checked out this morning were the big jumping pillows. >> they are cool. they are like a giant trampoline. and you can run out there. there are ones for little people and big people and you can just bounce to your heart's delight. and i have to tell you my 6- year-old was telling me last night, best invention ever was

conditions. 67 degrees at reagan national airport. relative humid is -- humid is at 93%. here is the forecast for today. winds at 7 miles per hour. 74 degrees for a -- degrees for a high. rainy heavy at times and could be a thunderstorm as well. that's it for the weather. we'll have more in a little bit. let's check in with julie wright and look at the traffic. >> it's busy out there coming in from the we have. still have problems out of the roads from centreville. this is a live shot of eastbound 66 right here at 28 and centreville where we have the right lane tied up. fire and rescue on the scene responding to the crash. this is in the backup that continues eastbound into 123. more slow traffic from nutley street to the beltway. beltway inner loop congested from springfield to an accident on the shoulder. more slow traffic from annandale to merrifield. northbound 395 past springfield and to up king street on 395 and then the pace improves but only to slow again across the

14th street bridge. crash at hunter fill road. outer loop is congested from 95 to georgia. you'll also find delays on the outer loop out of of the bw parkway. bw parkway, the ramp to exit at 198 greenbelt road is closed. they are documenting an accident that occurred overnight. so it's just the ramp closed but it's contributing to the outer loop delay. traffic slows on both sides of the beltway near andrews afb that has cleared. that's a check of your fox 5 on- time traffic. the hunt is on for a killer in maryland. police found a man shot inside a car just before midnight. this happened in the 3400 block of dodge park road in landover. same area where another man was found shot in a car just days ago. sarah simmons is live on the scene with more on today's top story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, allison. it is bizarre. the same area and the same road, the am another shooting occurred eight days ago. another man was found shot inside of a vehicle.

now police say last night's shooting happened before midnight. police are telling us a man was found suffering from a gunshot wound inside of a vehicle and he was then taken to the hospital where he was found dead. i spoke to a resident saying he saw it all take place last night right before his eyes. here is how he described the situation. >> i heard the crash and then there was a guy that got out of the van, walked up to the cadillac, they had some words and a shot went off. then the guy got out of the cadillac, he ran, the guy shot him again on the steps. the guy ran up to the steps and died. so we just called the police. >> reporter: now there was another shooting, a man found dead inside of a vehicle on september 18th, again eight days ago. that young man was 22-year-old donald eugene rieves. they have not identified the victim in this case from last night but at this point it's unclear whether or not these two cases are related in any

way. back to you. >> sarah simmons live in land over, thank you. a woman accused of killing a chevy chase doctor six years ago was found dead at a state mental hospital. susan sacks was found strangled in her bed at the cliffton perkins state hospital in jessop yesterday morning. police say she was murdered by another patient. she was accused of dr. joyce hadele who was her landlord. the man that killed sacks yesterday is convicted in a 1990 murder in baltimore. it's not clear how he got into her room. montgomery county police searching for the driver involved with a hit-and-run on saturday night. they say a vehicle struck and dragged 24-year-old daniela ali while she was walking on carol avenue in silver spring. she is hospitalized in serious condition. the driver sped off, leaving behind a piece of evidence at the scene. >> they did leave the right- hand side exterior passenger mirror on the scene after it

struck her. and there is the possibility that the driver, it is a possibility, could have been intoxicated and may not realize they hit anything at all. >> police are looking for a sedan, maybe a honda, with damage to the right side hood and windshield. an emergency landing caught on camera. federal transportation officials are looking into what caused the landing gear on a delta connection flight to malfunction. forcing this plane to make a risky landing at jfk airport on saturday night. now a passenger used their cell phone to capture these images of sparking flying as the plane careened down the runway with a wing dragging on the tarmac. the flight operated by atlantic southeast airlines was traveling from atlanta to white plains when the pilot discovered the mechanical problem. >> they just kept saying keep your head down. we're going to make an emergency landing. they must have balanced it on one year and he'sd it over to the wing, so he did a great

job, i was nervous there for a minute, though, i will tell you. >> what you couldn't hear is passengers applauding after the landing. they praised the pilot and their crew for their actions. luckily no one was hurt in this. the pastor of an atlanta megachurch facing allegations of sexual misconduct. he did not address the allegations during sunday services but he did talk about them. some parishioners wanted them to explain more. marianne rafferty has more. >> i am not the man being portrayed on the television. that's not me. [ applause ] >> that is not me. >> reporter: he's facing four civil lawsuits alleging inappropriate sexual relations with young boys. bishop eddie long calling in 25,000 faithful supporters to stand behind him and he's vowing to fight.

[ cheering and applause ] >> reporter: the bishop didn't proclaim his allegations that he lured those into sexual activity. >> after service we wanted him to say pain he did not do the things that have been leveled against him. and that was not said. >> the bishop has proven himself over the years to be a man of integrity and character. so i have to stand behind the character that i know. >> reporter: the four young men say he groomed them for sexual relationships and were 17 or 18 when it began. investigators are declined to prosecute because the age of

it is just about 8:12 now on this monday morning. let's look at stories making headlines. manassas firefighters say a cigarette thrown into a planter caused last thursday's massive fire that destroyed three homes and damaged five others. they also point to other factors like high winds and the fact that the houses on the street are so close together. and maryland's first casino just opened at 8:00 this morning. three days ahead of schedule. it was scheduled to open on thursday but a demonstration on saturday went so well that state lottery officials said go ahead and open today. well another tough loss for the redskins.

to newington headed up on 395. that doesn't shake loose until you come across the 14th street bridge. inner loop of the beltway delays out of the bethesda eastbound through silver spring. outer loop still slow at 95 college park around to georgia avenue. that's a check of your fox 5 on- time traffic. you know arguments about money have doomed many a marriage so it makes sense to lay the bills out on the table and have a frank talk with your fiance before marriage. and with us is larry rosenthal, the president of financial services in manassas. this is a big topic when it comes to marriage? >> absolutely. when two people put their houses together, one of the big issues is money. >> and we don't realize because each person has saved hopefully, has their own plan out there and then sometimes merging those becomes the challenge. >> you need to have a conversation on how people feel about money. you really need to make sure who is coming to the table with debt. that's one of the big first

conversations. >> let's talk about. and you have five things to talk about. is there debt? how do we handle this discussion. >> why is the debt there? because one partner is overspending constantly or was there a one-time big expense? you have to find out if people are spendthrifts or can't manage their money because that could impact pressure on a marriage. >> and you have the debt on one side and on the other side are their investments? >> right. people want to invest for different things. you have to discuss the risk question. some people say i want my money to be in the bank and not go up and down in the marketplace. and another couple will say i want my money to grow as much as i can. and then you have to look at time horizons. one spouse will say maybe i want to save for a new car and the other one will say it's more important to save up for college or retirement planning so big discussion. >> and there is no one answer. you're just saying put it out

there and have this discussion and then figure out what will work best for the two of you. >> absolutely. we highly recommend that people get together and discuss spending and saving habits, talk about risks and time horizons. and one big thing is when they bring two households together is to do a beneficiary check. you might have your group insurance or parents or somebody else as a beneficiary. you have to go through and make sure your beneficiaries are all properly aligned with the new marriage. >> and you mentioned insurance? >> you have to make sure you have the right amount of life and disability insurance. which is the most underpaid. a lot of time people are living off of one income and they raise their standard of living to the two incomes and then if somebody gets hurt, what will happen? >> you talked about the budget and financial plan and hopefully each person has their

own budget, but like you said they could be off slightly or in great ways so make sure that that works for both people. >> one great way to look at the budget is look at where you've spent your money over the last three or four months and put two columns in. is a a necessity spending or a lifestyle choice and have people put checks in each column and someone might say it's definitely a necessity that i have this entertainment package, and another might say we need to carve some life savings or a car in a few years. >> and maybe this is a couple that want to be together for a long time and enjoy the golden years so you need to talk about retirement even if you are young? >> people need to save money each month. they need to put it away in retirement plans that work or ira's, as long as they are saving each month and living within means, they can build for themselves a dependable stream of income to help

the airline industry. southwest airlines said it plans to buy airtrans. they said this operate from 100 different airports. they will pay $100 billion. the airline is expected to combine operations by 2012. a big recall announced this morning. hyundai is recalling almost 140,000 sonata sedans. the recall is for 2011 models manufactured between december of 2009 and now. they could have a problem with the steering column. now dealers will inspect and update it for free. the recall is due to start in october. welcome news on the wilson bridge project this morning. some construction work wrapped up early over the weekend. the two new ramps at the telegraph road interchange on the beltway are open. they will significantly improve traffic flow and safety in the area. earlier this morning we spoke with a manager of the project about some changes that drivers

struggling. sasha and malia attend the sidwell friends private school. and today bob woodward's book hits the shelves called obama's wars. in writing the book, the washington post reporter had access to top policy makers, including the president. while the economy still number one on the minds of voters and there is a new poll out about who is to blame for the foreclosure mess. scott mass muse enjoins us with a closer look. good morning. >> good morning. great to be with you, allison. >> one of the saddest thing about the down economy is about how many folks lost their homes and you did a polling of the attitudes connected with that and surprisingly, you found that most people didn't blame the banks for the foreclosure mess? >> that's right. only 20% say unfair lending practices are to blame for the foreclosures. and this is not because they don't know what is going on. most americans, 57%, know someone who lost their home because they couldn't make the payments. but overall americans still believe that the bigger problem

is that some people who can't afford homes are able to get a mortgage rather than some other concerns about lending practices. >> 59% saying people got greedy or reached for the slice too big for them to afford. and also something interesting too. when it comes to the november elections that we're talking about in the news, if a candidate is compared to a president, say like president reagan or clinton, then that's a good thing. if other presidents are the ones that they remind you of, not so g. this is so interesting. >> yeah. 47%, nearly half the nation, say if a candidate is compared to ronald reagan that's a good thing. only one in five say that's a negative. if it's bill clinton, 40% say positive, 30% say it's a negative to be a candidate like bill clinton. but when you get to carter and bush, the numbers reverse. the numbers who say it's positive for both men is in the

teens. 47% say being compared to jimmy carter is a negative. 52% saying compared to george w. bush is a negative. so be careful what you call those candidates on the campaign trail. >> that's got to hurt. and one week to go in the regular season for baseball and people have their minds made up, saying the yankees are going to take it? >> that's right. people expect the yankees will win the american league. phillies will win the national league and setting up a rematch of last year's fall classic. >> we will -- i don't know. steve, my partner, doesn't agree with the american people. but we'll see. scott rasmussen, thank you so much. >> it's not that i disagree. if we have more local teams to support. >> steve thinks the pirates are still in it. >> no. they were out of it in april. >> okay. just like giving him a hard time. i didn't know that. >> yeah. they have lost close to 100

the eastern seaboard. so a lot of rain in the forecast today. the possibility of strong thunderstorms not out of the question. we could see some heavy rain. so no flood watches in the washington area, but not too far away off to the south and west toward charlottesville as we'll have rain today, tonight and into tomorrow morning. then we start to quiet things down by tomorrow afternoon. 68 degrees, not a bad start. 64 in gaithersburg. quantico 66. and annapolis 71 and leonardtown 72 degrees. our forecast, a lot of rain today. 74 the afternoon high. cool and cloudy. excuse me, kind of cool, very cloudy. a lot of rain, heavy at times. mentioned a thunderstorm. and winds out of the southeast at 10-15 miles per hour. there are your early showers and maybe a thunderstorm tomorrow morning as the frontal system comes through the cold front and then clearing out on wednesday. but kind of unsettled this week and more rain on thursday and then sunshine on friday. so we need the rain. not this much but we have a lot in the forecast for the next 24

madame tussauds' d.c. is creating a $2 million u.s. presidential gallery that will house all of the 44 presidents. the gallery is set to open in early february. but you have been getting sneak peeks if you've been watching fox 5 morning news. joining us now with the latest president to come in studio is lisa mcclure from madame tussauds' d.c. and this is president grover cleveland. except he wasn't brother grover cleveland. his first name was steven. he was born march 18th and one of nine children. he was the son of a presbyterian minister. >> and he changed his name because he thought steven cleveland would be strange. is that what we think? the name would rhyme too much? >> i'm not exactly sure. but the most important thing about mr. cleveland is that he was -- had two terms, which is not unusual, but

nonconsecutive. so he actually was the 22nd and the 24th president of the united states. >> wow. he had other firsts. like he was the first president to get married in the white house. and what is special about his bride, which is interesting, because we say this is a very mature man who is president cleveland, but his wife was -- >> she was 21 years old. youngest first lady. he was 49 at the time. and during the second administration, he had a daughter esther and she's the only child to be born in the white house. now other interesting things about grover cleveland is he was actually the sheriff of erie county, new york and he hung two murderers in his administration. he had a quick term in the white house. in 1882 he was a mayor. in 1883 he was the governor of new york and in 1884 he became the president. and of course he also has great ties to washington, d.c. because during his summers at the white house it was very,
